, February 16, 1990 The Message -- for Catholics of Southwestern Indiana 13 PHREnTS By MARY ANN HUGHES Message Staff Writer During Catholic Schools Week, parents with students in Catholic schools throughout the Diocese of Evansville were asked to write letters to their children explaining "why they chose to send their children to Catholic schools." When parents at Precious Blood School, Jasper, were asked to write their children let- ters the response was "nothing h.[ " ,, . t positive, according to Sister Gloria Memering. " "They all said, 'It's so good o do this, and we wouldn't ave thought to do it." When the letters from the Parents arrived, they were given to the Precious Blood Students. "It was a very special , time in the classroom," Sister Memering said. "The students not only wanted to read their letters out loud, but they wanted their classmates to hear also.', Here is a sampling of the let- ters written to the students at . Precious Blood: "Dear Jenny, We are writing you a letter to ll you why we sent you to ecious Blood School, We both went to a Catholic grade school and also a Catholic high School. Pam and George Stallwood "Dear Nick, As you know, this week is Catholic Schools Week. The theme this year is "Yes! Catholic Schools, a Parents Choice." Your dad and I would like to tell you why we chose to send you and your brothers to a Catholic school. We feel Precious Blood School is doing a great job of educating you in reading, math, history and all the other subjects you are taking. But we also feel that your religious education is just as important. We know that at Precious Blood, God is an important part of each school day. Not only are you learning 'reading, writing and arithmetic,' you are also learning to live your life as Jesus would want you to." Dan and Karen Healy "Dear Tara, I have noticed since you've been attending Precious Blood School that your whole attitude has changed for the better. You are much happier, and more in- terested in everything that goes on around you, like getting your homework done earlier. Sending you to this Catholic school has been the best deci- sion I've made concerning your education, because they stress the important aspects of the stu- dent, mental, phYSical and spiritual. The teachers not only say they care, but show they care in every way they can. They teach important values that you'll remember all your life." Kathy and Mike Terwiske "Dear April, We love you very much. We send you to Precious Blood School for many reasons. Number one is because we want you to become a good Catholic and to know that God is always with you. We feel that Mr. Seger and Father Kane and all the teachers at Precious Blood will teach you this as you grow up. All of the teachers care about what happens to each of you children and they want you to make something important out of your lives when you "Where customers send their friends!" Larry and Connie Kluemper "Dear Jayma, Daddy and I love you very much and we want the best for you. That's why you're in school at Precious Blood. We think it's the best place for you to learn about Jesus and his teachings. We know your teachers will help you and guide you in your journey to the Lord, because they care about you. What you learn here at PBS will be important to you now and later, even though you may not think so now. We know that God gave you to us -- you are a most precious gift. Our gift to you is sending you to a school where you can learn about this wonderful God. Listen and hear Him Jayma. You, in turn, can teach others by your example." Dave and Sandy Wehr "Dear Travis, When we moved here four months ago from Missouri, we were so glad to find Catholic schools in this area. We have never been lucky enough to live in an area where Catholic schools were an option. Learn- ing about your faith is so impor- tant, and because we feel the quality of education is much better in a Catholic school, we enrolled you. We know that we made the right decision, and we hope you will take advantage of this wonderful opportunity." Peggy and Michael Geifer "Dear Jarred, The main reason I chose a Catholic school for you rather than public was the wonderful religious teaching you receive and the closer ties that are form, ed when combining education and religious teaching. I feel the teachers are more sensitive to the students as people, and therefore, education is adjusted to meet the needs of the students, not vice versa. In a Catholic school, Jarred, you grow both in mind and soul. One without the other becomes two-dimensional and flat.'' Cathy and Arnold Hopf "Dear Philip, We are writing this_ letter to tell you why we chose Precious Blood School when you were old enough for school. We wanted you to learn about Jesus and how gentle and loving He was to everyone, but especially to children. We wanted you to learn to treat everyone as He treated people. We wanted you to be in a safe and happy place during the early years of your life. We also wanted you to make your First Communion in a small group so you could learn what a special thing Holy Communion is." Bonnie and John Schwenk "Dear Jamin, We sent you to Precious Blood School because we ourselves grew up in a Catholic community w.th a good Catholic background. We think it is very important for children of today to believe in God and have a good Christian educa- tion. It is very nice to see all the children of all grades personal- ly involved in the Mass with Father on week days." Marilyn and Charlie Hochgesang "Dear Miranda, We chose to send you to Precious Blood School because we want you to learn the values that we did by attending a Catholic school. It is very important to learn things like love, giving, caring, honesty and faith in God,very early in your life. This is the time to learn these things, as you will be challenged by many temptations to go against God's will later in your life. With a firm foundation like you will have from attending Precious Blood School, you will have a head-start in living a good life and being a good person." Thomasa and Joe Lechner Keeping your gratitude polished! The art of expressing gratefulness is a measuring rod for the quality of one's personality. Nobody becomes so important not to need to be grateful. Keep your gratitude polished up, let it shine on others; it will reflect on you with increased strength. Your reward for sharing gratitude will be so great that not even eternity will nullify it. There is a simple, but powerful magic released in supplying the hungry spirit with the vitamin of sincere gratitude. As Father Ziliak said, "we have to go after our people." I believe there are people in our diocese among the inactive Catholics and unchurched who want to be a part of a religious community but no one is per- sonally inviting them. Father Ziliak could not have written his article at a better or store clerk, and watch the glow of acceptance spread all over their faces. You've lifted their spirit, and they will extend themselves to enrich your life too. Gratitude is the biggest little investment you could make on your journey through life. This .virtue carries with it a double-barreled blessing, benefitting the one who gives and the one who receives. So, take the time to say "thanks;" but most of all in doing so, give thanks to God! Father Clinton Hirsch ! Wouldrt't it be great if the Diocese of Evansville would make a joint effort to canvas its boundaries? Father Conti would be jumping for joy. People do not believe or trust the credibility of Roman Catholic institutions today, and that lack of credibility is justified. I would suggest that Father Ziliak read the book of Daniel and then read the book of Isaiah, hopefully after meditating on these readings he will have a conversion of mind and heart.
