The apostles are familiar with their fami- lies and are able to bring their concerns to the parish. People keep in touch with people, Wilderman said. New people are welcomed into neighborhoods. Families in a neighborhood are aware of a death in the neighborhood, a First Communion, participa- tion in the RCIC or RCIA, or a variety of other important happenings. Many families who live in the parish have little or no dealing with the parish -- until time for sacramental preparation or some other event in their lives. When that happens, Wilderman said, an apostle is already in place in the neighborhood to provide information and to be By PAUL R. LEINGANG Message Editor "If God is to be real to every family in Holy Re- deemer," said Dorothy Wil- derman, "it is going to be through other people." That's why the Neighbor- hood Apostolate Ministry was formed two years ago at Holy Redeemer Church in Evansville. Now there are 45 "apostles" who each serve about 10 families in their neighborhoods. Wilderman is one of the five members of a committee which coordinates the work of the apostles. Commmittee members also include Carla Head, Margaret Gries, Father Robert Temme and Father William Wargel. The committee makes sure that the apostles know about MATER DEI FRIENDS AND ALUMNI ASSOCIATION, INC. MAJOR FUND RAISER RAFFLE of assistance. The apostles meet four times a yea, Wilderman said, "to touch base with the other apostles, to help support oth- ers in their ministry, and to let people know what the oth- ers are doing." The general meetings also provide an opportunity for the parish to provide the apostles with up-to-date in- formation about new pra- grams -- such as "Helping Hand." The "Helping Hand" pro- gram coordinates volunteer workers in the parish with people who need some help, fixing up or painting their home, for example. Informa- tion about the program is in the parish bulletin but the personal reminder at a meet- ing reinforces the message, Wilderman said. The apostles have an im- portant role during the plan- ning and celebration of two important events in the life of the parish, Wilderman said. The new Holy Redeemer Church building will be dedi- cated the weekend before Easter, and the parish will be observing its fortieth anniver- sary this year.
