The Message -- for Catholics of Southwestern Indiana Diocese prepares to celebrate its golden ju By PAUL R. LEINGANG Message editor T. he Diocese of Evansville will celebrate its golden jubilee year, Nov. 11, 1994, to Nov. 11, 1995. In preparation for the celebration, members of a core committee met Jan. 29 to begin planning. In the coming months, com- mittee members will chose a theme, adopt a logo, and seek out ways to involve and in- clude everyone in the diocese in the celebration. i i w I 301 MAIN ST. VINCENNES. Father Boeglin, pastor of St. Peter Celestine Church in Celestine, is the au- thor of the book, "Celestine, In- diana: A Sesquicentennial His- tory." Father Boeglin said he hoped the jubilee celebration would "create a better commu- nity" among Catholics in southwestern Indiana, so that the word "diocese" would mean more than "that place in Evansville." According to the emphasis in the recently revised Code of Canon Law, a diocese refers to the people in the territory, not just the territory. A diocese is defined as "a particular church," or as "a portion of the people of God." The Diocese of Evansville in- cludes the people in 73 parishes covering 5,010 square miles of southwestern Indiana. The territory includes all of 12 counties -- with one exception. One township in Spencer County, where St. Meinrad Archabbey is located, is part of the Archdiocese of Indianapolis. The Diocese of Evansville was formally established by Pope Plus XII on Nov. 11, 1944. The new leader of the new diocese was ordained a bishop in his seminary chapel, Dec. 21, 1944. He was installed as the first Bishop of Evansville, Jan. 3, 1945. In preparing for the jubilee, Benedictine Sister Joella Kid- well said she hoped that it would be a celebration "of new beginnings" -- not only of the history but also a celebration "of what can be." Committee members had similar hopes -- that the cele- bration would bring about a sense of unity and belonging. Two committee members ex- pressed hopes that people who were alienated from the Church might be encouraged to return, during the fiftieth year. Committee members have not yet agreed on how the ju- bilee year wilt unfold. In prin- ciple, they agreed that one large event should be held, that there should be smaller celebrations or events in parishes or regions, that a commemorative book should be a LinCo Coffee Services Total Beverage Distributor Indiana. Among the committee mem- bers is Msgr. Clinton Hirsch -- one of the first priests ordained by Bishop Grimmelsman. (Msgr. Hirsch and Father Ray- mond Reising were ordained Feb. 2, 1945.) Msgr. Hirsch has worked in the Tribunal under all four bishops of the diocese, and served as diocesan admin- istrator in the interim period between the departure of Bishop Paul F. Leibold and the installation of Bishop Francis R. Shea. In addition to Father Boeglin and Msgr. Hirsch, committee members also in- clude the following: Bob Har- mon, Vincennes; Marilyn Father Earl a.
