Glenn Close and Christopher Walken star in a "Hallmark Hall of Fame" dramatization of Patricia MacLachlan&apos;s novel about a New England woman who travels to the Midwest in 1910 hoping to make a new life with a motherless farm family. On the "Travels" series, U.S. photographer Jeffrey Becom journeys from Venice to Naples to capture on film the unique colors and rich history of this Mediterranean country. Thursday, Feb. 7, 10-11 p,m. EST (PBS) "America's Man- darin." The third program in a rebroadcast of "Vietnam: A Television History" is devoted to how the United States re- placed France as the bulwark against the spread of corn- munism in Southeast Asia, an episode ending in the political chaos after the assassination of President Ngo Dinh Diem in a military coup. Friday, Feb. 8, 9-10 p.m. EST (PBS) "Steps Ahead." In a presentation of the "Great Per- formances" series, the Alvin Alley American Dance Theater considers its past and future with two contrasting works that exemplify the dance company's versatility. "Women Pastors' teleconference to air The National Pastoral Life Center, New York, NY., will present a teleconference on "Women 'Pastors'" on Feb. 7, from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. CST. The teleconference is available for viewing and live participa- tion at the Catholic Center. The intended audience, ac- cording to the producers, is "women interested in pastoral ministry, priests, deacons religious educators, diocesan personnel and others interested in the future of ministry in the Church. He said a recent study by a sociologist estimates that there are about 300 parishes in the united States where, instead of a resident priest-pastor, the parish ministry is directed by someone else. Two-thirds of these "other pastors" are sisters, a quarter are deacons, six percent are brothers and about nine percent are lay men and women.
