1993 The Message -- for Catholics of Southwestern Indiana 11 2r page 1 n -- story, memorized, of followed immediately 10 minutes of crit- were seldom t to give a presentation. my horror, I was! I a Week to prepare. I for roughly 268 d the poem Ride" for my pre- a true Kraut-ball, I Would be cute if I think up with my Version of a singy-songy, galloping, gallumpling, hell- bent for leather spiel. I was barely started when I detected faint snickering. These promptly exploded into raucous guffaws that drowned me out. I stubbornly decided to finish in this fash- ion to the bitter end- and did. Dec ended the pandemo- nium with "Now for criti- cism, if any." That's when the sky fell. I had never been so humbled. I thought I'd drown in my tears, but, I survived. I was the last one out of the assembly. Dec was consider- ably ahead of me. He slowed, stopped, turned around, placed a hand on each shoul- der, gave me a big as the har- vest-moon smile., and said, "I was proud of you! That's learning the hard way!" Dec died in 1930. His death does not mean he's gone. When you teach you touch eternity. He lives on in those he taught and whose lives he touched. They are many widely and profusely scat- tered. When I approach milepost 69 on I64 headed west I do an occasional glance to the left i in anticipation of the twin spires of St. Meinrad Arch- abbey. Though I be bare- headed, I none-the-less "take my hat off" in deference to Dec. I know that somehow he is still there, overshadowing the place. Our earth is a far better place because of his brief presence. Our Maker outdid Himself when He made Dec. Doc's mind and heart were far superior to those of most of us. Hope to see you soon, Doc! !hlngton Catholic High StUdents, may you soar on angel wings to the mages- WCHS faculty and Christi eighth graders. Keep up the great work. I'm so proud of you.
