J.aanuary 18, 1991 The Message- for Catholics of Southwestern Indiana 15 Haitian Continued from page 1 hristide, president-elect of Haiti. The Catholic priest elected by a landslide in December was due to take office Feb. 7. Haitian crowds burned the Vatican nunciature, forced the Papal nuncio, Archbishop iuseppe Leanza, into the street and stripped him to his under- shorts, and destroyed the Hai- tian bishops' conference head- i,qUarters, the residence of Arch- bishop Francois-Wolff Ligonde of Port-au-Prince and a 387-year-old cathedral, said to be the Caribbean's oldest. The attacks on church pro- perty and persons, a Haitian observer familiar with the situa- tion said, were directed against Archbishop Ligonde, who is seen by many Haitians as a col- laborator with the remnants of the Duvalier family dictator- ship. Archbishop Ligonde had angered followers of Father Aristide, who was expelled from the Salesian order for his political activity, by attacking him in a New Year's Day homi- ly. In the homily in the capital's new cathedral, packed with government officials and the diplomatfc corps, the arch- bishop called Father Aristide a "socio-Bolshevik." Mahfood, who defended the Haitian bishops for not speak- ing out during the Duvalier regime in saying that "like anyone else, they would have -received a visit at two in the morning ... and been killed," added that he didn't think "Father Aristide is Bolshevik or communist." "Every time somebody wants to try something different, the easy thing to do is to call him a communist," said Mahfood in the interview. Time will tell how well the priest can run Haiti, said Mahfood.
