Around 100 volunteers removed all the church furnishings so that a new heating system, insulation and drywall can be installed. She believes the prison system collaborates with the abortion industry. Prison life is "a spiritual ex- perience. Beautiful, but it's really hard," Ms. Andrews said in an interview published Jan. 7 in The Long Island Catholic, newspaper of the Diocese of Rockville Centre. Nonetheless, "so little sacrifice is asked of me con- sidering the injustice to the babies" aborted in the clinics, she said. Interviewed in Florida's HUNTINGBURG Buehlers I.G.A. Broward Correctionai Institu- tion, she was awaiting transfer to a prison in Alderson, W.Va., and then to a prison in Delaware She went to prison after being convicted of charges of burglary, resisting arrest and criminal mischief, for knocking down and trying to rip the cord from a suction machine at the Ladies Center Clinic, Pen- sacola, Fla., in March 1986. It was her first felony conviction. Had she chosen to cooperate in prison, she would have ac- cumulated enough merits for good behavior to be released Jan. 2. She said she has been im- prisoned "for trying to stop the killing" and thinks that if more pro-lifers did "rescue work" -- tried to stop clinics from performing abortions -- abor- tion would soon end. "If everyone were totally committed, if everyone blocked the door of the abortion mill, the holocaust couldn't exist," she said. Ms. Andrews said she adopted activist tactics after deciding that anti-abortion lob- bying and picketing were not enough.
