12 The Message -- for Catholics of Southwestern Indiana Catholic Charities reportS successful Christmas giving Catholic Charities has completed another successful Christmas Giving Program, ac- cording to Jim Collins, director of Catholic Charities in the Diocese of Evansville. Collins expressed appreciation to the donors who made the program a success. Wayne Bochert and Margie Schenk, who co- ordinated the program, reported that over 90 families were helped through this pro- ject. Collins said that Catholic Charities "is proud of our sponsorship of this very worth- while project," and he expressed apprecia- tion for "all the donors, volunteers, coordina- tors and other participants who have made [the project] a heart warming success." The Christmas Giving Program provides an opportunity for needy families to be matched with donors who provide Christ- mas gifts for the families. The families are identified and visited by volunteers from Catholic Charities to assess the needs and number of children in the family. The donor is furnished with clothes sizes and a Santa wish list for each child, and then purchases appropriate gifts. The donor then has the option of delivering the gifts personally or having Catholic Charities make arrange- ments to have the gifts picked up at a cen- tral location. Margie Schenk explained that, in addition to individual families, many donors are businesses or churches who coor- dinate buying of gifts. Bochert expressed his appreciation to Msgr. Michael Wolf at the Pro-Cathedral of the Most Holy Trininty for the use of facili- ties. The gifts were stored and distributed at the parish buildng, in the activities center. Bochert said that "it was a joyful and lively occasion when a family came to pick up their gifts," He added, "Many of the fami- lies said that without the generosity of the donors they wouldn't have received any Christmas gifts." Bochert said the program "reflects the generosity of the people in the Evansville area who wish to share their Christmas with a less fortunate family."
