Habitat Blitz During the week of June 15- 20, volunteers for Habitat for Humanity built 21 homes in downtown Evansville. Over 2,000 volunteers, including professional carpenters, elec- tricians and contractors, of- fered their services. Sponsors of the new homes included Catholic churches in both the Evansville East and the Evansville West deaneries, Resurrection Church in Evansville, and St. Mary's Medical Center employees. Holy Redeemer Church is a member of the Northside Ministerial Alliance which also sponsored a home. Transitions DEATHS Msgr. Fredric Niehaus, 88, died March 28. He had resided at Little Sisters of the Poor, Evansville, since 1985. Father William Tillson, 44, a native of Sullivan, died of rabies in Bangkok, Thailand, on April 21. Father Tillson had been working as a mis- i i i Ilu, sionary in Bangladesh since his ordination to the priest- hood in 1990. Father Josdph Kress, O.C.S.O., a trappist monk in Cistercian Order in Gethse- mane, Ky., and a native of Schnellville, died July 9. VOWS Sister Michelle Willett, O.S.B., made her final vows as a Sister of St. Benedict at Monastery Immaculate Con- ception, Ferdinand, Sept. 5. RETIREMENT Beaulah Evans of Evans- ville retired Nov. 1, 1992, after more than 20 years of leadership in the Catholic Ed- ucation Foundation, Inc. CEF board members, officers and volunteers raised more than $2.1 million from 1971-1992. More than $1.5 million of that amount was used as grants-in-aid to 4,117 stu- dents attending Mater Dei or Memorial high schools in Evansville. For the 1992-93 school year, lg7 grants were awarded, totally almost $102,000. CEF also assists Marian Day School, Evans- ville. Radolfo Mantejano is the new executive director.
