The MES S A GE i SPECIAL SYNOD SECTION -- JANUARY 1993 By PAUL R. LEINGANG Message editor "Exciting,', is the first word Father John Davidson usea to Parish Synod Assemblies i i Parish meetings on pastoral issues being held in the diocese describe the parish synod as- sembly at St. Anthony Church, Evansville. It is the very same word used by Sis- ter Adele Beacham, S.P., a member of the parish synod task force. Sister Beacham said she was "just amazed at the spirit." People were excited, upbeat, she said. "It was like the days after Vatican Council," said Father Davidson. "People were get- ting all 'turned on' by church." Throughout the Diocese of Evansville, parish synod as- semblies are being held to discuss church topics and questions. Delegates are also being selected at the parishes, to attend deanery synod as- semblies which are sched- uled Feb. 20 and 21 through- out the diocese. The parish synod assembly was held Dec. 13 at St. An- thony Church, and there was no shortage of volunteers for the five-member deanery del- egation from the 35 parish- ioners who attended the parish assembly. Five delegates were also se- lected Dec. 6 at the parish as- sembly held at St. Joseph Church, Dale. "' .A!l Praise, be Yours through Jesus Christ Our Lor..AMEN .,,. ........ ... St. Anthony churches were among the earliest to sched- ule their parish synod assem- blies. There are four purposes for the parish assemblies, accord- ing to Sister Louise Bond, S.N.J.M., chancellor. The four are the following: To pray for the continued guidance of the Holy Spirit. To reach greater clarity regarding the purpose of a Diocesan Synod. To name the Primary Pas- toral Issues that have the greatest effect on each parish. To determine who will represent the parish at the deanery assembly. Sister Beacham, Gertrude Howard and Kathy Reitz are members of the St. Anthony parish synod task force. They organized their parish assem- bly, and now the parish staff is in the process of writing up their report: Participants at the St. An- thony assembly agreed that the most important issues of those suggested were the fol- lowing: 1) Expectations/ Role/Supply of Priests, Deacons and Religious; 2) Family;' and 3) Healing and Reconciliation. St. Anthony participants also discussed their parish weekend liturgy schedule, and some questions about Communion from the cup two items they plan to refer to their own parish council. Information about the Deanerv Synod Assemblies, the schedule of times and places, and a list of parishes in each of the deaneries, is found on the last page of this special four-page section. I I Questions/Answers what's a primary pastoral issue? It is what people are talking about in the parking lot after . the big meeting at church. It is the completion of the sentence: "I just wish our church would .... " Or, "They spend all that time {or money} on this or that but what we really ought to do is .... " A primary pastoral issue comes from the heart, Or from the gut. It is something worth argu- ing about. And worth praying about, too. Please define synod. The Synod in the Diocese-of Evansville is a process of con- sultation called by Bishop Gettelflnger to plan for the fu- ture, Synod '93 will giw vi- ' sion and d'irection'tn the Church by d0veloping a spe- cific long-range plan for the diocese. The Synod will ex- amine and update diocesan programs, structures and policies to facilitate this vi- sion and direction. What is a parish assembly? R is a meeting of the parish family. It is for people who love the Church and want to be a part of it. People who care about what the Church is doing, or not doing. People who pray for guidance from the Holy Spirit. When such people get to- gether, they congratulate each other on their achievements. They talk about their dreams and what they would like to do. They try to see who needs help and who can, give it.
