By 1873, a new church front and a sacristy were added, and a bell tower rose 208 feet above the city. The tower fell in 1950. The destruction of the landmark building began with a stroke of lightning, during an electrical storm on Palm Sunday;Fire followed, weakening th .[ structure. The church interior was damaged beyond repair. " The fire provided an opportunity for Bishop Henry Grimmelsman. From the beginn- - ing of the Diocese in Evansville in 1944, the Chancery offices had been maintained in Bishop Grimmetsman's home, With ground available where the landmark Holy Trinity Church once stood, plans were made for a :new church and a new Chancery Office. Con- struction began in 1956; the new:Holy Trinity Church was blessed and dedicated on November 17, 1957.
