THE FOLLOWING appoint- merits were made by Bishop Shea during 1987 for the Diocese of Evansville: -- Father Richard Wildeman, was appointed pastor of St. Mary Church, Sullivan. -- Father Jean F. Vogler was appointed pastor of St. Boniface Church, Evansville. -- Father Wilfred L. Englert was named associate pastor of Holy Family Church, Jasper. - Father William M. Schwenk was appointed pastor of St. Francis Xavier Church, Poseyville. -- Father Joseph L. Ziliak was appointed pastor of St. John the Baptist Church, Newburgh. -- Father William Dietsch was appointed pastor of Nativi- ty Church, Evansville. -- Father Albert J. Scheller was appointed pastor of Mary, Help of Christians Church, Mariah Hill. -- Father Eugene Heerdink began work in Quite, Ecuador, as a member of the Parish. Neighborhood Renewal Ministry based in Duluth, Minnesota. -- Father Joseph W. Kitsch was appointed pastor at St. Joseph Church, Dale and ad- ministrator at St. Nicholas Church, Santa Claus. -- Father Albertus P. Lutter- bach was appointed pastor at St. Joseph Church, Bramble. -- Father Robert Nemergut, from St. Anthony Church, Evansville, left on sabbatical September 1, 1987. -- Father John Breidenbach was appointed associate pastor at St. John Church, Vincennes. -- Father Leo Kiesel was named pastor of Blessed Sacra- ment Church, Oakland City. -- Father James E. Sauer was appointed full-time director of continuing education for clergy. -- Father John Boeglin was named pastor of St. Celestine Church, Celestine. -- Father Frank Renner was named associate pastor at St. Joseph Church, Jasper. -- Father Theodore Heck, O.S.B., was named pastor emeritus of St. John Chrysotom In September of 1987, Bishop Francis R. Shea traveled to Los Angeles with other U.S. bishops to attend a meeting with Pope John Paul II. The bishops' meeting was one highlight of the pope's 1987 U.S. visit. "It felt very good to be in his presence," said Bishop Shea. "It was a blessing to be one of those to whom he was speaking." In 1987, Pope John Paul II named Benedictine Father Daniel Buechlein as bishop of Memphis, Tenn. He had previously served as president- rector of St. Meinrad School of Theology and St. Meinrad College. The appointment was an- nounced Jan. 20 by Archbishop Pie Laghi, papal pronuncio to the United States. Bishop Buechlein was ordained and in- stalled March 2 in the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Memphis. In August, Bishop Shea named Father Raymond Kuper as Director of Catholic Educa- tion for the Diocese of Evansville. In his new position, Father Kuper began working with Catholic school ad- ministrators throughout the diocese as well as all 73 religious education directors. John Breidenbach was or- dained to the priesthood in August at St. John Church, Loogootee, by Bishop Shea. Bishop Shea termed the event as "a happy moment in the life of a young man and in the life of the Church." Two Benedictine sisters, Sister Barbara Lynn Schmitz and Sister Susan Ann Necas, pronouced final vows in July. Sister Lynn Marie Belli pro- nounced first vows at the Con- vent Immaculate Conception, Ferdinand, in June. Sister Caerine-White pro- nouced first vows as a Sister of Providence at St. Mary-of-the- Woods in July. In March, Paul Leingang was named Director of Communica- tions for the Diocese of Evansville. He was also named editor of the Message. He replaced Father Joseph Ziliak, who was named associate publisher of the Message. Peter and Paul Church, Haubstadt. -- Father James Blessinger was named pastor of Sacred Heart Church, Vincennes. -- Father Pius Klein, O.S.B., was named pastor of St. Mary Church, Huntingburg. -- Father Nicholas Taylor O.S.B., and Father Mark O'Keefe, O.S.B., were ap- pointed members of the com- muting chaplain group serving Convent Immaculate Concep- tion, Ferdinand. The resignation of Father August Busch as pastor of St. Celestine, was accepted by Bishop Shea. April. Father Joseph Erbacher celebrated the 15th anniversary of his ordination in March. Father James Sauer celebrated the lOth anniversary of his ordination as a priest with a Mass of Celebration March 27. Two Poor Clare sisters celebrated the anniversaries of their profession in June. Sister Mary Catherine Schultheis celebrated her 75th jubilee and Sister Mary Matilda Daniots celebrated 70 years of profession. Sister Carol Ann Mause celebrated her 25th anniversary as a Sister of St. Francis; Olden- burg in July. Two Benedictine sisters at the Convent Immaculate Con- ception, Ferdinand, celebrated their diamond jubilees in June. "They were Sister Mary Edward Heckel and Sister Mary Paschal Schulte. Sister Jovita Scheessele observed her golden jubilee. Four Benedictine siste celebrated their silver jubilees. They were Sister Anita Peters, Sister Mary Louise Uebelhor, Sister Patricia Ann McGuire and Sister Norma Fultz. The first Permanent Deacons for the Diocese of Evansville celebrated their tenth anniver- saries. Members of the first class were Joseph Blankenberger, David Franklin, Richard Grannan, Frans Hillenbrand and Joseph Seibe. Brother Lawrence Miller celebrated the 50th anniversary of taking vows as a Brother of Holy Cross. Sister Jane Becker of Convent Immaculate Conception, Ferdi- nand, was elected a Councilor of the Federation of St. Ger- trude, an organization of 15 Benedictine priories throughout the U.S. and Canada. Msgr. Fred Niehaus celebrated his sixtieth anniver- sary of ordination to the priesthood in May. Msgr. Clarence Lindhauer celebrated the 50th jubilee of his ordination to the priesthood in May. Father Robert Green celebrated the golden jubilee of his ordination to the priesthood in June. Father Joseph Ziliak celebrated the 25th jubilee of his ordination to the priesthood with a Mass of Thanksgiving in Ministry of reader Cyril Will was one of eight candidates for the diaconate in the Diocese of Evansville who were installed in the ministry of reader on Sunday, January 3 at Sarto Retreat House, Evansville.
