of the celebration. The Nia
Dancers, under the direction of
Diana Northington, entered
the celebration room only after
they asked for and were given
permission by their elders.
Kwanzaa items and symbols
used during the celebration in-
cluded a candle holder, seven
candles, a straw mat, a Unity
Moral relativism is an "insid-
ious enemy" of democracy, not
its natural result, he said.
"One must work with
courage so that social struc-
tures are respectful of those
ethical values that express the
full truth about humanity," the
pope said.

A Kwanzaa "Farewell State-
ment" encourages participants
to "Strive for discipline, dedica-
tion and achievement in all
you do." The statement con-
cludes as follows:
"Lord, may the wisdom of
the ancestors always walk with
us. May the year's end meet us
laughing and stronger. May
our children honor us by fol-
lowing our example in love and
struggle. And at the end of
next year, Lord, may we sit
again together, in larger num-
bers, with greater achievement
and closer to liberation and
higher level of human life."
